5 resources to help your kids discover Canada!

If there is one subject my daughter can’t get enough of, it’s Geography. Maybe because we have been focusing on Canada this year with our Classical Conversations community.

In previous Cycles, when studying the World we had used Blob Mapping tools from Brandy at Half a Hundred Acre Wood.

We’ve also done Expedition Earth from Confessions of a Homeschooler. We did this prior to starting CC but look forward to starting it back up as we review different regions in the next Cycles.

We discovered a different country of the world every week and had plenty of activities.

For example we made Diorama of the rainforest, studied different ecosystems and had paper models for those, every week’s feature supper on Friday night was themed for that country along with decorations the kids made in the dinning room. You can check it out HERE. We still have our Great Wall of China. Here’s the Lego peace tower with our cat at the time showing his approval of it all.DSCN9618

My daughter really looked forward to the activities so when I saw that there was a Canadian Road trip I was glad to try it with the kids.

Since this year’s focus was Canada, we wanted do use some resources that helped anchor all that new grammar and that was fun too. So far, I am really glad with what we found and I had to share it with you!

The Canadian Homeschooler’s Canadian Adventure, a Virtual Roadtrip across Canada. You can purchaseThe Canadian Homeschooler a digital copy HERE.

This resource is great for multiple age levels. I have an 8 year old and a 2.5 year old and they both have fun with this.

I printed out the passport and pages, found some fun Canada stickers to stick in our passports every week and placed some  Canadian Coloring pages I also found on the site.

The Virtual Roadtrip curriculum is full of links and activities and we make it a weekly theme. It’s a great way to review some of our Canadian History and Geography as we go along too!  It is definitely helping us dream up some vacations we want to make together as a family.

For mapping, we used Kristin J. Draeger’s Draw Canada and Greenland51S-Y2ayBtL book.

It can be purchased HERE.

It takes your child through each province and territory step by step.

On the top of each page is a paragraph describing shapes to help your child remember how to draw it by memory eventually.

The hardest part of this is to get them to stop. The first time we opened the book, we armed ourselves with rulers, pencils, paper and erasers and went at it. It was so much fun, we got all the way to Nunavut(which is half the book), also identifying Lakes and Bays along the way. (perfect CC review).

For older children that want more details on each province such as economics, population, political, Natural resources, industry, etc.. I would recommend Donna Ward’s book Geography Province to Province.  In this 126-page full colour book, you will find for each province a multitude of information without it being overwhelming for your student.

Once you purchase the book, a digital copy is available online for your student to answer question. Although my 8 year old is young for this book, we use the provincial symbols sheets and add it into her Passport in her binder. We are definitely going to enjoy all the other valuable information contained when she is older!

Check out my previous post about History and Geography resources for  links to her products HERE.

Comment below and let me know if there are any subjects you would love to hear about for your homeschool experience with your family!

  1. Awesome. My kids are young (5, 3, and 9 months) but I might have to check this out. We are only an hour away from canada, so It would be a great place to start for geography (which we have not started yet)
